WESTBURY children showed off their creative side last weekend as they got stuck in with re-painting the multi-area games wall in Grassacres Park.
The community came together on Saturday to join Bristol-based artist, Tom Miller, to create three murals on the walls, which Westbury Youth Club, 4Youth (local youth outreach workers) and TEAM10 (the children’s community action group from Westbury Junior School) had prepared for the occasion.
Susannah Duval Smith from Team 10 said, “63 children (and a few excited adults) worked with Tom to create the murals, which are a magical and vibrant interpretation of Westbury and its surrounding area.
“At the start of the day, Tom drew out rough sketches and then gradually children worked on small areas. At first, the canvas seemed to be a collection of multi-coloured irregular shapes but, gradually, as if by magic, pictures began to emerge; the White Horse on the hill, a dog with an ice cream, a paraglider, sheep and a smiling pig.
“On the back of the wall there is a child with a mushroom umbrella and a fantastical rabbit and duck combination. Westbury Youth Club and TEAM10 would like to thank the artist, Tom Miller, and Westbury Town Council for the support given to organise this wonderful event!”
Westbury Youth Club is held from 4.45pm to 6.15pm every Wednesday during termtime and has a range of weekly activities for 11– 19-year-olds (up to aged 25 with learning disabilities) to enjoy. It costs just £1 to attend and the club can be contacted on Wiltshire Together https://wiltshiretogether.org.uk/profile/westbury_808 or via Facebook.
