THE grass verge on the left of Mane Way towards Tesco Express has been “completely destroyed” by delivery lorries and cars using it as a parking space.
Town councillors have been alerted to this problem before. However, with the added problem of wet and winter weather causing more damage than previously, it will be discussed at the next council meeting, in order to discuss possible solutions.
It has been brought to the attention of Westbury Town Council that the delivery lorries causing the damage is due to Tesco’s inability to keep the delivery entrance clear for items to be dropped off.
Cllr Ian Cunningham explained at the town council’s highways, planning and development meeting on Monday 15th January, “I spoke to the [delivery] driver in the summer and he says he drives slowly on and slowly off [the verge] to stop damage. This was okay in the summer but not in the winter, it has completely destroyed the grass. The driver’s argument was that Tesco don’t keep the delivery access clear.”
Cllr Jane Russ said, “I went to have a look round the back when I was there one day and the driver is absolutely right. Tesco’s completely block the whole of the road that runs behind for deliveries.”
Cllr Ian Cunningham added, “Now, the lorry has been seen to be parking on the road and not on the verge. This could be due to something being done. However, it is likely to be because the vehicle would get stuck if it attempted to park on the verge.”
Cllr Russell Hawker then talked through a previous suggestion to CATG (Community Area Transport Group) and suggested the only way to sort the problem is to put in place poles to stop the cars and lorries from parking on the destroyed verge.
Cllr Ian Cunningham finished the discussion saying, “I suggest we put this on the next agenda and perhaps look at the possibilities of putting some posts there. I think it’s appalling, it’s not just a little bit of damage.
