WESTBURY Leos and students from Matravers School, have continued their work in tidying and restoring the town’s Quakers burial ground, which includes the resting place of Westbury benefactor John Matravers.
Westbury Lions, Leos, Matravers students and volunteers took to the Quakers burial ground on Saturday 24th February, to continue their restoration work and research into the newly-found burial site of the last John Matravers.
Research into the burial ground, which is located behind solicitors Pinniger Finch & Co, has revealed that John Matravers who left £1,000 in his will to set up the school, is buried on the site. Archeologist, Julian Richards, has visited the site and given advice on how it should be restored.
Westbury Lions said, “Once again our amazing Leos have been working hard!
“Today they made a start on reviving the ‘lost’ graveyard in which John Matravers is buried. More trips will be required to complete the project, but in just a few hours we had a skip full of rubble and all the weeds cleared, and his gravestone uncovered for the first time in many years!
“Thanks to everyone who helped and supported our young team this morning, especially Hire Standards, for loaning us wheelbarrows and shovels, and the team at Pinniger Finch & Co for supplying a skip and allowing us to invade their car park.”
