A community fridge in Westbury is helping reduce food waste while providing free fresh produce for local residents.
The Westbury Community Fridge offers surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, including fresh fruit and vegetables, bread and pastries.
The fridge is open from 10.30am until 11.15am from Monday to Thursday at the Westbury Community Project building on Eden Vale Road and is available for anyone in the community to use.
Operated entirely by volunteers from Westbury Area Network (WAN), the project aims to reduce the amount of fresh food being sent to landfill while helping residents save money.
“It is such a shame to think that so much good food would otherwise go to waste, so we are very keen that as many local people as possible take advantage of what is on offer at the community fridge,” said WAN trustee Ian Cooper.
“Now that the summer holidays are here, it is a great time to check the community fridge out.”
Most of the produce is donated by local supermarkets, although residents who grow their own fruit and vegetables can also donate any surplus items for others to enjoy.
While specific items cannot be guaranteed on any given day, there is usually a variety of fresh produce available.
The community fridge is supported financially by Westbury Town Council and aims to benefit both residents and the environment by preventing good food from being thrown away.
