Group for neurodivergent women goes from strength to strength

A Westbury group offering a safe space for neurodivergent and socially anxious women has made a positive start since launching in May.

The Comfort Cafe was launched in Westbury by Donna-Michelle Donkin and her daughter Cerys following the success of a similar group in Trowbridge. The group now meets every two weeks on a Tuesday morning at the Leigh Park Community Centre (LPCC).

“It has been lovely and positive to hold our sessions somewhere new, and to connect with lovely new ladies who haven’t been able to make any of our Trowbridge sessions,” said Donna. “The manager and staff at the venue have been so supportive and passionate about our venture, and I would say this is a real highlight for us, it’s great to feel their support and to be welcomed so warmly each fortnight.”

Attendees are welcome to spend the sessions however they would like. Some choose to chat, sit quietly, read or focus on crafts.

“We fully appreciate that some women struggle to even make it through the door, and we welcome them to just sit quietly and coexist with us, or to join in conversation, whatever feels comfortable,” said Donna. “We have literature and puzzle books, adult colouring books too, for some focus and distraction if preferred, or women can bring their own craft. We’re very relaxed. You don’t need to mask in this space.”

The LPCC has recently received funding to develop an allotment, and an agreement has been made that The Comfort Cafe can participate in the development of a section of this.

The Comfort Cafe also recently welcomed a local artist to join a session for a gentle and informal lesson in watercolour art. Donna and Cerys hope to put on more experiences like this for attendees in the future.

“We’ve had such validating and positive feedback from women who have joined us so far; women who struggle with social interaction, women who feel misunderstood or isolated or frustrated with trying to fit a social expectation that just doesn’t feel comfortable or sustainable,” said Donna. “We’re not professionals: we’re a mother and daughter duo with lived experience and we want others to feel supported and encouraged to be their authentic self.

“Plus, there’s always tea and cake, what’s not to love!”

The next session will take place on Tuesday 4th August from 10.30am until 12.30pm. Any woman over the age of 18 who can relate to navigating life with neurodivergence and/or social anxiety is welcome to attend.

To find out more about attending or volunteering, message The Comfort Cafe Facebook page.
