THREE amateur poker players from Charlie’s Bar have reached the regional finals of a national poker competition.
Richard and Helen Stokes and Simon Taylor will compete in the south- west regional finals of the Redtooth Poker League in Bristol in March.
Richard said, “We have just completed a 13 week poker tournament and three of our players have made the regional finals in Bristol. It’s run on a league basis, players play for points and at the end of the 13 weeks the top two players on points go to the regionals. We were also able to send a third player after a play off.
“I understand there could be upwards of three or four hundred players at the regional finals. The top eight go through to the nationals, where there is a chance to win quite a lot of money.”
The winners of the national finals will receive a £2,500 cash prize. The league has been running on Tuesday nights in Charlie’s, and is free to enter.
Richard said he was going to enjoy the experience of the regional finals.
He said, “I’m looking forward to it, I must admit it’ll be something different. We’ll be taking quite a few supporters with us, people who have played week in week out in the league. There’s been a lot of interest in it, we’ve had around 23 people signed up and it’s been really good.”
“Helen says she can play properly but I’m just lucky!”
