Westbury Town Council has presented 53 local organisations with grants to help them continue their good work in the town and villages.
Representatives from each of the groups were invited to the Grants Presentation Evening where Westbury Mayor, cllr Christine Mitchell presented each group with a cheque on Wednesday 2nd February.
This year, grants ranged from £100 to £500, with a total of £13,000 distributed.
On reception of their cheque, each organisation thanked the town council for their generosity and explained a little about what their group does and what the money will be used for.
For many groups, the grants will help them to continue to run their activities by going towards running costs. For others, however, the grants will be used to enable specific projects to go ahead.
Amongst the recipients were Westbury and District French Twinning Society, who will use their grant to help them host the French delegation when they visit Westbury in April. Westbury Cricket Club explained that their money will help them to upgrade their training facilities, particularly for young players.
Westbury Junior Netball Club will use their grant to replenish their supply of balls and buy new kit for the team, as well as helping with transport costs. Westbury Lions club will use their grant to help them run their annual Senior Citizens’ party in April.
Just some of the other local organisations benefiting from the grants include Bratton Silver Band, Jubilee Close/Haynes Road Selwood Tenants’ Group, Leigh Park Community Association, Sapphire Twirlstars, Westbury First Responders, West Wilts Youth Sailing Association, Westbury and District Choral Society, and Westbury Arthritis Self Help Care Group.
Every year, the council budgets an amount to be distributed to various causes that benefit the local community, and considers applications from local organisations.
Organisations who requested grants, filled in an application form, giving an outline of what the organisation does and how it benefits Westbury and its residents, as well as highlighting its projects. Once all the grant applications were received, the town clerk and mayor were among a group who assessed all the grants.
