A WESTBURY cyclist is gearing up for a marathon cycling challenge – cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
Julian Dagger will use the challenge to raise money for Kidney Research UK and Bath RUH’s Intensive Care Unit, in memory of two people very close to him.
Julian said, “As I turn 50 this June, I want to do something significant that I can look back and be proud of.
“As a keen cyclist, I have decided to go for ‘The Big One’ – John O’Groats to Lands End. It is something I have always aspired to and have been inspired by a dear friend, whom we lost last year, to have a go. Given that this year is a milestone for me, I feel now is the right time to give it a go!
“Not only will it be a personal challenge, but any money raised from sponsorship will be split between Kidney Research UK, in memory of my late mother Jean Dagger, and Bath RUH Intensive Care Unit, in memory of our dear friend, Derek New. Both approached their health issues with an incredible determination to carry on regardless and retained a positive attitude to enjoy each day instead of dwelling on “why me?”
“They are an inspiration to me and a constant reminder of what is possible with determination, a love for life and the love and support of your family. I know they will be with me in spirit and willing me to complete the challenge.
“I plan to do the ride over a 12-14 day period in the spring, with my cousin John Gardner, another keen cyclist who also reaches his half century.”
