A WESTBURY woman has just sent off a cheque for £2,662.31 to Help for Heroes – bringing her fundraising total for the charity to £3,692.54.
Denise Deveney started her fundraising when her son Brendan left for his first tour of Afghanistan, and with a second son in the army as well, it’s a cause that is very close to her heart.
Denise explained, “My two sons are in the army, and one’s done Afghanistan twice. I started when he had his first tour over there – that was November 2008 – and it’s just gone from there.
“It doesn’t go very far when you think how many there are coming back injured, but at least I’m doing my little bit. It’s a great achievement but without everyone supporting me, I wouldn’t be able to do it.”
Denise’s fundraising events have included two ‘welcome home’ parties for her son, collections, and a bingo evening – and the whole family has got in on the act with son Graham running the Bath Half Marathon for the charity as well.

Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of a desire to help the wounded servicemen and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq.The charity believes that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero – these are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life.
