AFTER passing 26 miles of mountainous scenery, a family of fundraisers have conquered part of Peru’s Inca Trail for charity.
Andrew Chappell, who established Chappell Associates in Westbury, daughter Katie and sons James and Lee decided to take on the challenge to raise money for a local hospice. The family has returned to the UK, having raised nearly £1,900 for their trekking efforts.
The funds raised will all go towards Dorothy House Hospice, who cared for Andrew’s mother before she lost her battle with cancer earlier this year.
Katie said, “The trail was something that we all wanted to complete and thought it would be the perfect opportunity to fundraise for such a worthy cause. The trail was extremely challenging. We had early mornings and very long, hard days walking. The steep steps and hills we climbed, alongside the altitude, were incredibly difficult.
“The porters who carried our tents and food were so fit. Wearing sandals, they would leave after us and somehow make it ahead of us to set up camp for our safe arrival. The normal food while we were walking was guinea pig and alpaca.
“I’m so proud of my brothers for completing this and I am sure my nan would be proud of us all.”
The trip culminated with the group reaching Machu Picchu in Peru, which is a pre-Columbian 15th Century Inca site located 2,340 metres above sea level.
