FRUSTRATED by flytipping in Westbury, a local councillor says the town needs to put pressure on Wiltshire Council to deliver a household recycling centre. Building on Westbury’s £20million Mechanical Biological Treatment Plant (MBT) on the Northacre Trading Estate is under way, but there appears to be no action to deliver the neighbouring Household Recycling Centre – which councillors fought for in the planning discussions. Town councillor Stephen Miles has been told by Wiltshire Council officers that the recycling centre is still on the cards – but there are no plans or funding to deliver it in the near future.“One of the problems which increases fly tipping is the lack of a domestic refuse recycling centre here in Westbury,” said cllr Miles. “The nearest are in Warminster and Trowbridge. One was proposed here, but alas, although it has a priority in Wiltshire Council’s list for locations of such centres, there is not the money to build or maintain such a centre at present. “They say they’re concentrating on domestic collections such as the blue bins at the moment, then there might be some point in the future for the recycling centre. The only thing I know is that if you take this on board you could be waiting for the rest of your life so I do think you’ve got to do something!”“I think our town council needs to be proactive to persuade and ensure that such domestic recycling centre is built here as soon as possible, and work with Wiltshire Council to find the money necessary from the budgets where there may be funding that can allocated to this.”
