THE Phone Box Gallery in the Westbury Market Place is currently displaying artwork from two Westbury Leigh artists and people are being encouraged to view the art as they walk through the town.
The Phone Box Gallery usually displays artwork from local schoolchildren but as it is the summer holidays, local artists Lesley Longworth and Beatriz Acevedo were invited to display their artwork over the summer.
Lesley says, “It was a pleasure to fill the gallery and I hope people come and have a look if they are in town. I think Beatriz’s work complements my work really well as her art is vibrant and features a lot of flowers and colours – she very much likes the work of Henri Matisse and this is reflected in her work whereas my work is much more subdued.
“I must say a thank you to cllr Jane Russ who curated our work beautifully! This is a great opportunity to showcase local artists so please do keep an eye-out as you walk through the Marketplace.”
According to the artists’ bio at the gallery, Beatriz, who is originally from Columbia, has lived in the UK for 20 years and moved to Westbury in 2022. She is a multifaceted artist and educator working in different mediums – from watercolour to collage, textile art, digital illustration and conceptual art. She is passionate about the importance of beauty in everyday life for health, wellbeing and community building.
Throughout her career as a scientist and educator, Lesley has combined creativity into her life and work and during the last 12 years she has focussed on painting as a main form of expression. Lesley draws on the classic language of portraiture to celebrate the lives of extraordinary people.
