Local author, Jane Russ, ends her productive year with another new release, ‘The Red Squirrel Book’, that adds to her British wildlife series.
Jane’s ‘The Owl Book’ was released in April and now ‘The Red Squirrel Book’ has just been added to the series from publisher Graffeg.
Jane said, “Covering the decline of the red squirrel (was the grey squirrel to blame?) and the slow rise again (does the pine marten help?) this fascinating book looks at all the options.
“The photography is stunning and the text informative and accessible. My other books have ‘Myth & Legend’ and ‘Art & Literature’ sections but the red squirrel has, once you get past one Swedish myth and The Tufty Club and Squirrel Nutkin, not a great deal of either.
“My publishers were as keen as I was to do a book about this charming creature, but I wasn’t sure if I would find enough detail to keep the interest going. How wrong I was, there was so much to research, in the end it was a joy to write.”
The red squirrel is supported in Wales by the Mid Wales Red Squirrel Partnership. “It was lovely to be able to highlight a group working for the benefit of red squirrels in Wales, ‘land of my fathers’ (and in this case mothers!) and home to the publishers Graffeg,” Jane continued.
“In fact, when we heard how nuts he was about red squirrels, we sent a copy to HRH The Prince of Wales for his birthday a few weeks ago.”
The compact square format and the affordability make it a wonderful gift for anyone with a love of British wildlife. “And on to the next,” says Jane, “that’ll be “The Robin Book” for this time next year.”
