A local woman, Heather Woodall, is holding a fundraiser this month to raise vital funds for Parkinson’s UK, after her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 13 years ago.
Heather and Woody Woodall have lived in the Westbury area for over 40 years, and for the past five years, Heather has been dedicated to raising money for Parkinson’s UK. Woody was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 13 years ago, and despite ongoing research, there is currently no cure. Heather hopes that the funds raised will aid in research into the condition and contribute to one day finding a cure.
The fundraiser, which is being organised by Heather and a close friend, will be held at Heywood and Hawkeridge Village Hall on Saturday 10th August from 10am to 3pm. Entry is free, and the event will feature stalls, a clothing sale, a tombola and food and drink from Angie’s Café.
A photo competition will also be held, with categories for photos of pets and any other genre. Entry costs £3, and the winning entry will be sketched by artist Darlas Hunter.
Children are welcome, and all funds raised will go to Parkinson’s UK and Mind.
Heather said, “My wonderful husband Woody was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 13 years ago and has slowly declined. What started as a mild tremor is now a totally debilitating state, resulting in him being wheelchair-bound with wasting muscles and difficulties speaking. This disease eventually leads to loss of life. Over the past five years, I have been raising money for Parkinson’s UK to aid them in their research in of this horrible condition and hopefully one day finding a cure. At the moment, there is no cure, and only a few drugs are available to help relieve some of the suffering of those struck down by this disease.”
This is the latest fundraising event organised by Heather. Last year, she organised an entertainment and fashion show that raised £3,000. She has also organised another fundraiser coffee morning with stalls.
“I hope this year we can attract more trade stands and other events to raise money,” said Heather. “We have a great following of friends and family who always contribute by attending and spending money or helping us in any way they can. We’ve lived in the Westbury area for nearly 40 years and have found that the local Wiltshire people have taken us to their hearts and helped us a lot with our fundraising. We hope it’s the same this year.”
