Three intrepid friends from Bratton are preparing for the adventure of a lifetime this October as they set off to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, all to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice.
Andrea Franklin, Dave Waller and Steve Ridley will embark on an eight-day trek, covering over 50 miles (90km) to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro, which at 5,895m is the highest peak in Africa and the highest freestanding mountain in the world.
“We’re doing this trek not only for the personal challenge to stretch both our physical and mental endurance but also to raise much-needed funds for Dorothy House,” says Andrea. “Their work is so important to our community, and we want to support them as much as possible.
“The expedition is entirely self-funded by us, ensuring that every penny raised goes directly to support Dorothy House and the fantastic work they do in Wiltshire.
“Dave and Steve had already booked the trek and somehow I got roped in to do it as well. I’ve never done anything like this before and after I’d said yes and read a bit about it, I thought, ‘Goodness, what have I signed up for?’
“It is going to challenge us physically and mentally and probably the mental side of it will be the hardest because we are training really well physically.
“We’ve done a lot of training, including a weekend in North Yorkshire where we covered 50km, an overnight 48km walk around Salisbury Plain, and numerous other hikes.
“We also have the full support of Tribe PT in Trowbridge, which has developed a specialised training programme tailored to the unique demands of the climb.”
For Dave, this isn’t the first time tackling such a feat. Last year, he ascended Mont Blanc to 4,000 metres but didn’t quite reach the summit. “This time, I’m determined to make it to the top,” he said.
The trio will be taking on the challenge with Discover Adventure, who provide an experienced guide and support staff, and ensure they have the necessary expertise and assistance throughout their trek.
