AFTER a year of fundraising, the outgoing Mayor of Westbury, cllr Gordon King, presented two local charities with cheques to help towards the good work they do in the community.
At the beginning of his mayoral year, cllr King selected Hope Debt Advice Service and Alzheimer’s Support as the charities he and the Mayoress, Carole King, would be raising money for.
The mayor met with representatives from both charities. Barbara Mantle and Julie Vince, debt advisors for Hope Debt Advice Service, were presented with two cheques, one for £1429.50 and the other £803.50 totalling £2,223, on Friday 11th May at Crosspoint in Westbury.
They said, “We will use the money to buy new laptops to help us totally comply with the new data protection regulations as before, we were using our own personal IT equipment, storing people’s personal details.
“We are also looking to use the money to buy WiFi anywhere facilities so we can meet people in different places, ones more convenient to them such as at their homes or in coffee shops.

“This will help towards expanding the service here at Crosspoint and we are always looking at different ways we can help the community. We offer a more pastoral and personal service for clients that might not have access to IT facilities, or are unsure of how to use them, so we will hold their hand as long as they need.”

The mayor and mayoress also presented two cheques totalling £2,223 to Alzheimer’s Support in Warminster on Monday 14th May. The charity has opened a new innovative dementia centre, including a purpose-designed Old Silk Works day club which is open four days a week, a weekly art group and offices for the area’s dementia advisers and home support care coordinators.
CEO Babs Harris, who accepted the cheque on the charity’s behalf said, “We are so grateful to cllr King and everyone in Westbury who has supported his fundraising over the past year. The money will enable us to bring our services to people living with dementia who will be able to benefit from the new centre.”
“If you would like to attend the club, come along to the centre’s weekly art group, volunteer or fundraise see www.alzheimerswiltshire.org.uk.”
