A MEETING will be held this week to look at creating a Friends of the Laverton group, to help the community use the iconic building to its full potential.
An informal meeting will take place this Friday 6th November at the Laverton from 4pm to gather interested parties and decide how the building can best be opened up for the public to use.
It is hoped that the group will be similar to the Laverton’s General Interest Group (GIG), which disbanded a few years ago.
Lilly Bale, who is hoping to kickstart the group said, “The Laverton contains the town council offices and a number of recreational groups use the facilities, but we want to open it up to become a real community asset.
“We want people and groups in Westbury to help us keep the Laverton alive, and suggest ways that they would like to see the building used. It’s not a private building to stand at the top of town with the doors closed; we want it to be open and used by everyone.
“It’s a landmark in the town and the first building on the new blue plaque trail; it’s important that the people of Westbury are able to make the most of it. It has a lot more to give.”
The Laverton was built in 1873, at a cost of £4,000, by mill owner and local MP Abraham Laverton.
