WESTBURY’S new mayor is cllr Mike Sutton and his deputy mayor is cllr Sheila Kimmins. The pair were elected into the roles at last week’s annual council meeting.
Speaking to White Horse News cllr Sutton, who was previously deputy mayor said, “I am very pleased to have been elected as mayor and grateful for the trust that my fellow councillors have in me to elect me this year.
“Westbury Town Council has advanced over the last few years and I believe it to be a progressive, forward-thinking and pro-active council that is the voice of the people.
“My role this year is to continue to develop Westbury and move it forward. The big challenge coming up this year is the continued delegation of services from Wiltshire Council and the work that Westbury Town Council will take on board.”
During the meeting, cllr Sutton said, “I would like to give my thanks to cllr Ian Cunningham, I think he has done a wonderful job as mayor over the last year. He has been to so many meetings – it is hard work. I’m not sure any of us realise the work that goes into heading a council of 14/15 very strong-willed people and leading them in the same direction, but I think he has done it very well.
“A very great thank you, not just on my behalf as your deputy, but on behalf of the whole town, for making Westbury better known than it was before.”
Cllr Sheila Kimmins, who has been on the council for two years told White Horse News, “I feel slightly overawed. I didn’t see it coming, but I am proud to be able to represent the town.
“I am looking forward to supporting Mike in his new role and help out as and when I can. Mike and I have known each other for 25 years, having both worked as Wiltshire Magistrates.
“We are lucky now to have a council that features people from all walks of life and who can bring different experiences to the table. We are also attracting younger people who can offer their perspective of the town.
“As a town councillor I have really enjoyed visiting the services for children in and around the town. I have visited a number of pre-schools and Stepping Stones in Trowbridge.
“Also, I much enjoy representing the elderly, they need a voice in this town and I’m proud to be able to give one.”
