A Westbury church’s sponsored hymn marathon has raised around £2,000 towards essential repairs for its historic organ.
Ian McManus, organist and director of music at All Saints Church, played hymns, songs and organ music on the organ and keyboard for 10 hours, taking only short breaks every two hours.
“It was a great achievement,” said Revd Rebecca Harris, Team Rector at the White Horse Team Ministry. “He was supported by our team here at All Saints, with food, drinks and people singing along to the hymns and songs.”
The church choir joined Ian in the afternoon, leading the singing of 30 hymns chosen by members of the community.
The funds will go towards essential repairs to keep the church’s organ, which is about 100 years old, in playing order.
“We would like to thank everyone who supported this event,” said Rebecca. “To all those who joined in with the singing and sponsored Ian, to those who served refreshments, offered crafts and colouring for children, and provided food and drinks – your support made this possible.
“In total, we raised approximately £2,000, which is a great result. We are well on the way to achieving our target of £11,500 to repair the organ.”
