BRATTON Primary School celebrated British science week in style as pupils dressed as scientists and took part in various practical sessions throughout the week.
British science week is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths that took place from Friday 10th March to Sunday 19th March.
“To kick off science week, we invited children to come into school dressed up!” said the school. “We wanted to challenge the children’s view of a what ‘a scientist’ really is. It was such a pleasure to see such a wide variety of creative costumes, and certainly gave the classes plenty to discuss about the various science related roles. Plus, it helped the children to understand how important science is to our everyday lives!
“One highlight for Leopard class was the discovery of a crime scene in their classroom on arrival one morning, with their class teacher playing Detective Hall on the case for clues!
“We also had the pleasure of Dr Marsh from Bath University join us for a morning practical science session. He conducted various live science experiments from flame testing different metals to witness flame reactions, a redox lollipop and an iodine check. The children were very impressed with the flame testing, with lots of wonderful visual reactions and follow up questions asked. The school is so very grateful to Dr Marsh for kindly donating his time to inspire our children with his love of all things science related!
“Across Key Stage 1, children collectively took part in a live online lesson by the National Farmers Union about building tractors and how the engines can be controlled from space. Gazelle class looked at environment changes with wood lice (which were all safety returned to their favourite log after) with the two older Key Stage 2 classes joining up to look into the effects of daylight on the human eye.
“The week concluded with a whole school science celebration assembly – it’s been a wonderful week which has certainly raised the profile of the importance of science across the whole school community.”
