WESTBURY Town Council is holding a story writing competition for local schools and residents on the subject of ‘climate change – your view of the future’ and the impact being felt globally.
Open to all, stories should be no more than 500 words and the deadline for receipt of entries is Friday 25th November 2022. Age categories are A – under 12 years, B – 12 to 19 years and C – 20 years and over. Category winners will each receive a £50 voucher and winners will be announced at the Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday 3rd December.
A spokesperson for the town council says, “Like many other councils, Westbury Town Council declared a climate emergency on 6th January 2020. But what does a climate emergency mean?
“Westbury is fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful countryside, but this countryside is under threat. Changing infrastructure has reduced green space surrounding our town impacting on wildlife and damaging fragile local ecosystems. The change in the climate which has led to long, hot summers causing catastrophic fires, has resulted in grasses, flowers and fruits dying. The lack of rainwater makes it much harder for wildlife to find the food and water they need to survive. Add to this the increasing amount of traffic on our roads resulting in pollution and air quality becoming worse, it’s easy to see why we use the word ‘emergency’.
“Why do we need to act now? What can we do locally to make a difference? What are your hopes and fears for the future? What have you done to try and help your community be a greener place to live? These could all be topics for a short story about climate change.
“The best stories will be included in a climate change booklet produced by the town council and available for residents to buy.”
