YOUNG motorbike rider, Jay Able, has secured second place in the Formula 400 championship, following a successful weekend at Castle Coombe race track.
And to cap a fantastic weekend, he also met and chatted with racing legend, Carl Fogarty, one of the most successful World Superbike racers of all time and winner of the 2014 I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!
The NG Road Racing Championship event at Castle Coombe, held over the weekend of Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September, is the main event of the season for competitors, which attracted celebrity riders like Carl Fogarty, Steve Parrish and Graeme Crosby.
Jay, 14, who has never raced at the circuit before, took part in the Formula 400 races after quickly learning the track during practice on Saturday morning.
His younger brother, Sean, was also due to compete at the circuit but following a crash at the Anglesey circuit, he sustained concussion and wasn’t allowed to race under ACU rules.
Jay found himself seventh in qualifying, managing to take third place in Race 1 on Saturday. Sunday’s races saw him take 5th in race 2 and 4th in race 3.
Now, Jay has enough points to be confirmed as the second place finisher in the NG Road Racing Formula 400 championships out of 49 riders, with just one more round to go at Oulton Park on Saturday 28th September.
Earlier this year, Jay was also awarded a Westbury Young People Award for his individual sporting achievement.
Jay’s father, Mark said, “Being as he is the youngest in his class, and is competing against adults, we’re particularly proud of how well he is doing.
“It was the best weekend in the calendar, being local. We had huge support from friends and family, as well as BBC Wiltshire showing an interest. The circuit commentators seemed to focus on Jay, and his exciting riding style.”
