Romans were in evidence, with togas and centurions rubbing shoulders, at this year’s popular and successful Edington Summer Fair.
Best costumes were awarded to George Zaman (child) and Yolanda Weatherhead (adult). The locals had come out to see the newly introduced sport of falconry which the Romans imported with them. They were not disappointed with a fine display of birds and keepers, happy to explain the intricacies of different breeds. Devizes Museum and Trowbridge metal detectors put on a fascinating display of Roman artefacts. Great Cheverill Primary School borrowed Roman costumes from Trowbridge Museum for their ‘shake and wake’ Roman-style routine, with audience participation. Bratton Primary School dance group brought everyone up to date with a very polished modern dance performance. The penned goats and lambs also delighted the children.
The afternoon was rounded off with a closely-contested human chariot race. The prize of beer, donated by the Three Daggers, insured a good entry. The Fair was hailed a success with over £3,000 collected for village activities.
