THE Friends of Erlestoke Prison charity is delighted and proud to welcome HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, as their ‘Royal Patron’ for an initial five-year term from July 2013.
The Duchess is well known for her considerable portfolio of charity work and patronages, but this is her first patronage of a charity dedicated to the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders. The Duchess visited the prison in March 2012 to attend a performance of ‘Les Miserables’ given by the Pimlico Opera Group; offenders from Erlestoke were part of the cast and worked backstage.
The Friends of Erlestoke Prison is a new and developing charity, registered in June 2012 and based at HMP Erlestoke, the only prison in Wiltshire.
The Friends aim to reduce re-offending rates by supporting projects and initiatives, which assist prisoners in: • Maintaining and building relationships with their partners and children • Finding education and work opportunities • Ensuring that they have somewhere to call home when they leave prison • Preparing themselves for release and a return to life without offending.
