SCHOOL pupils from the Westbury area took part in their very own mini Rugby World Cup last week, to mark the start of the international tournament.
The afternoon’s activities, organised by Westbury Rugby Club, involved a tag rugby competition and a skills-related assault course.
Around 150 pupils from Bitham Brook, Bratton, Crockerton, Dilton Marsh, Sutton Veny, West Ashton and Westbury Juniors primary schools went along to the event at the White Horse Country Park.
One of the organisers, Westbury RFC’s Youth chairman Julian Phelps said,“The children enjoyed playing tag rugby in their very own World Cup, where different schools represented different countries of the world. They also enjoyed the rugby skills-related assault course in the Rugby Fun Park.
“We would really like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who took time off work today to make this a fantastic event. The coaches were supported by older pupils from Matravers who were outstanding and a real credit to their school.
“We’d also like to thank the Horse and Groom on Alfred Street, who were very happy to sponsor the event and will be showing the Rugby World Cup games live during the tournament.”
Westbury RFC Juniors play on Sunday mornings. Boys and girls ages 6 – 13 are invited to come to a try-before-you-join scheme, which is free. Training sessions start at 10am and children just need to turn up at the club and will be directed towards one of the relevant age-groups.
