Westbury entertained local rivals in the latest West of England Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Premier 2 Division, hoping to put behind them two defeats in successive weeks against Rockhampton and Dumbleton.
Westbury made three changes from last week’s defeat at Rockhampton with Michael Coles, Alex Senneck and Sayeed Ibrahim coming in for Osmond Shallow, Ian Pinchen and Luke Dilena.
Westbury won the toss on the hottest day of the summer so far and decided to bat first. They opened with the regular openers of Coles and Esau and the total reached 18. Trowbridge struck by dismissing Esau unluckily leg before for 16 off the bowling of Angell.
Coles was then joined by Mills at the wicket and they started confidently and the total rose quickly, with the 50 coming up in the 15th over. They took the total to 96 when Coles was brilliantly caught in the deep off his brother Tom for 28. Baldock then joined Mills and shortly after, the total reached 110 when Mills was run to miss communication with Baldock for 41.
This brought Dickinson to the wicket and the score continued to rise, when at 151 Trowbridge struck twice when Reynolds took three wickets with Burdock (200) and Gill (0) out. Dickinson was then joined by Senneck. Shortly after, Dickinson was also out at 152 for 19 when Reynolds bowled him. Senneck, who had recently arrived at the wicket, was then joined by Ibrahim, with some quick running between the wickets. But when the total reached 178 Senneck was caught by Tom Weaver off the bowling of Reynolds for 14. Lucas then came to the wicket and he was run out by a throw from the deep for going for a second run, with the total at 178.
This brought Carroll to the wicket and with the help of Ibrahim, they took the total to 196 for 8 wickets off their allotted 50 overs. At the end of the innings Ibrahim was unbeaten on 14 and Carroll unbeaten on 12 (off three balls). Michael Reynolds had the best figures of 4 for 18.
When Trowbridge batted, they made a bad start when Carroll dismissed Evans bowled for 3, Oakley caught at slip by Coles and Reynolds brilliantly caught behind by Burdock for 0 with the total at 28. Cookson was then joined by the Trowbridge captain, Tom Weaver, and they started to score quickly with Cookson the dominant batsman. But when the total reached 69, Westbury struck for the fourth time when Weaver was leg before by the inform Mills for 11. Cookson was then joined by the Trowbridge all-rounder Veal and then dominated the bowling and they took the total to 124, when Westbury struck twice when Lucas the Westbury spinner dismissed Cookson (49) and Carroll (0). Scott Mitchell then came to the wicket. During this partnership Veal completed unbeaten on 52 and Scott Mitchell unbeaten on 28. Andy Carroll had the best figures (3-20) ably supported by Mills (2-38) and Lucas (2-50).
This was a disappointing result as this means that Westbury have now suffered three defeats in a row before heading to Biddestone next week, hoping to end their recent run of defeats.
Match Points. Westbury 6 pts. Trowbridge 18 pts.
