STUDENTS at Matravers School have been celebrating this month as they received their A-Level and GCSE grades, with both year groups achieving ‘impressive’ results.
Year 13 students collected their A-level results on Thursday 16th August while GCSE students collected their grades last week.
Matravers School said, “The sixth formers of Matravers are celebrating some impressive A-level and BTEC results. The students rose to meet the challenge of the new, tougher linear A- levels, with many securing top grades.
Top performers included Phoebe Bohana who is going on to study media at Cardiff University, Joey Medway who has secured a place to read law at Warwick University and Georgia Travis who is going to Southampton University to study politics and international relations.
“Head boy Owen Adams is going to study mathematics at Cardiff University and head girl Ellen Blackman is going to Brighton University to read applied psychology. Other destinations include Portsmouth, Manchester Metropolitan, Plymouth, Liverpool, Gloucester, Winchester and Bournemouth.
“A highly successful ‘mixed pathway’ of A-levels and BTECs continues to be a county-leading major strength of the Matravers Sixth Form with a number of students excelling in this area, including Alana Daborn, Harry Phillips and Charlotte Taylor. These qualifications have enabled students to move on to study higher education courses as diverse as photography, stage make-up and hair design.
“The Matravers School Sixth Form has a broad range of subjects available to new entrants this September. Students can opt to study from a wide range of traditional A-level subjects alongside more vocational qualifications in subjects such as business studies, IT, health and social care and outdoor education.
“There are still a few places available and any student who is interested in joining this growing success story should contact Ian Browning (director, post-16) at the school as soon as possible.”
GCSE students collected their grades last week, which this year has a new numbered 9-1 grading system, to reflect a more demanding curriculum.
The school said, “Matravers School is once again delighted with another superb set of GCSE results. The class of 2018 have delivered, yet again, another ‘record breaking’ set of GCSE grades. Our 4+ in both English and maths increased by 6% (63%), 5+ in English and maths increased by 10% (40%), as well as our Attainment 8 ‘smashing’ last year’s figure and moving forward to 45.0.
“A significant group of students (10%) have gained the highest grades across the board, gaining at least 5 grades at 7+. An example of this true academic excellence is where one of our students achieved 7 Grade 9s; this outstanding achievement placing them in the top 1% in the country for student outcomes.
“We are also delighted at the quality throughout these GCSE results. A high proportion of students have achieved significant progress from their KS2 primary scores, as well as students who face significant disadvantage in life achieving well beyond the national expectations.
“All of which sets up our students for the next phase of their education. We are looking forward to welcoming back the vast majority of the class of 2018 to our thriving sixth form, and to our students moving on to apprenticeships and colleges; we wish them good luck for the future.”
Dr Simon Riding, headteacher commented, “We are exceptionally proud of what is happening at Matravers School. Our school sets the highest expectations of all students in our care, and these GCSE results takes us a significant step closer to meeting our vision of becoming a world class centre of education.
“The new examination system is designed by Government to be harder, with standards expected to rise from this. Whilst pupils have been exceptionally well prepared, the demands made on pupils across the country have risen significantly.
“Through our students’ hard work and dedication to success, they have risen to the challenge.”
