UNPICKING the stories behind Westbury’s historic inns is the theme of a festival heritage walk.
The walk will focus both on open pubs and those that have disappeared or been converted into houses, many within living memory like the Lopes, the Castle and the Oak. It will also explore the stories behind pub signs as well as focussing on the community role of the pubs. There’s scandal too, with publicans being fined for diluting their beer and one landlord losing his licence because his wife was a drunkard.
The walk starts outside the library and ends at the Angel in Church Street and takes place on Saturday 1st October at 2pm. It will be led by Sally Hendry and Liz Argent of the town’s heritage society and museum.
There are other treats in the festival for heritage fans with a talk on Tuesday 4th October by TV archaeologist Julian Richards about his career in archaeology. Marc Allum of BBC’s Antiques Roadshow will be casting his expert eye over your family treasures when he hosts a special event in the parish hall on Thursday 29th September.
