WESTBURY runner, Tim Cairnes, will be running the London Marathon this year in aid of national charity, Get Kids Going.
Rookie runner Tim first got into running when his son set him the challenge, on his 60th birthday, to run a half-marathon.
With the help of his local running group, Westbury Running Group (which he now helps lead), nine months later he did it.
He is now in training to complete the full distance – 26.2 miles – around London’s streets.
Tim said, “I’m a little addicted to running now, it really is surprising how great it makes you feel.
“A few years ago, I would never have imagined I could run, let alone be running the London Marathon.
“What would be even more fantastic is to raise lots of money for an amazing charity at the same time. So on Sunday 26th April, I will be running the London Marathon in aid of Get Kids Going.
“This national charity gives disabled children and young people, up to the age of 26 years, the wonderful opportunity of participating in sport.
“They provide them with specially-built sports wheelchairs so they can do athletics, marathons, tennis, skiing, rugby, sailing, boccia, basketball, sledge hockey, table tennis, fencing, shooting, archery, powerlifting and many more sports.
“Get Kids Going inspires British disabled youngsters to compete in sporting events, from start to Paralympic level, by also giving them sports grants to help with their; training, physiotherapy, travel, competition fees, design and development of sports’ equipment etc.
“With your help many can become world record holders and Paralympic champions! Their aim is to give support to all their budding Paralympians.
“Help them turn dreams into reality.”
As part of Tim’s fundraising, he will host a ‘curry & quiz night’ on Friday 28th February from 7pm at Leigh Park Community Centre.
Tickets are £15 per person and can be bought from the centre.
There will also be a licensed bar and raffle.
