STUDENTS from Matravers School have returned from a week in The Gambia, where they worked in their link school, Gunjur Upper Basic.
During their visit over the half-term break, the sixth form students also experienced local life and had the chance to learn about the culture and customs of the area.
Link co-ordinator David Oakley said, “The main purpose of the visit is to develop greater links between the two schools, so the group spent two days at the Upper Basic School. This was a fantastic opportunity for staff and students to experience how the lessons differed from ours in the UK, and many of the group were surprised to find that the topics and subjects covered were similar to those at Matravers. While at the school students and staff taught lessons, helped the Gambian students reply to letters that had been written by Matravers students, and also continued with our recent photographic project.
“Since our last visit, the school had managed to build a new six-classroom block to replace the classrooms damaged by storms in 2009, and the group checked the water system that was paid for and installed by Matravers School.
“Other visits the group made included visiting other local schools, a reptile sanctuary, Banjul city market, a nature reserve and local hospital, where the lack of facilities and medical supplies really brought home the contrast between Gambian health care system and our own NHS. On the last day the group spent the morning distributing parcels of clothes, medicines and other gifts to local rural families who are financially struggling as a result of a recent loss of either a parent or parents.
“Throughout the week the group had many exciting opportunities to both learn about the Gambians’ culture, and to relax and have fun. Some of the best nights were spent being entertained by local drumming and dancing around the camp fire and playing with the children from the local community who visit to meet the guests from the UK.
“The group flew back to Gatwick on Friday with very mixed emotions. They were sad for leaving such a welcoming smiling community, pleased to be reunited with their families and loved ones, but all the time aware that the experience of the last week would stay with them for the rest of their lives.”
