WEST Wiltshire representative, Ellie Pullen of Westbury, recently attended the first meeting in a new term of office for the South West division of the UK Youth Parliament.
16-year-old Ellie, who has been a member of the Youth Parliament for West Wiltshire for the past two years, attended along with Charles McGrath new member for East Wiltshire and deputies Kieran Mulvaney (North), Jordan Green (West) and Aodhan Burnell (East).
The meeting discussed UK Youth Parliament’s campaign for the year ahead, ‘A curriculum for life,’ a campaign which over 250,000 young people from across the UK chose to be debated in the House of Commons by members of the Youth Parliament.
The ‘curriculum for life campaign’ states ‘The UK Youth Parliament believes the national curriculum should be radically overhauled through a youth-led review that helps develop young people’s political knowledge, better sex and relationship education, cultural awareness, community cohesion, finance skills and sustainable living.’
Ellie said “This is the start of my third year on the UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) and I am really looking forward to representing the young people of West Wiltshire for another year. I started off the day working on the UK Youth Parliament’s campaign for the year, ‘A curriculum for life’, with existing members of youth parliament shaping what we would like the curriculum to include. This was while the new members and deputies learnt about how UKYP functions and their responsibilities in the role. In the afternoon we came together to learn about ‘Heritage Heroes’ such as the Tolpuddle Martyrs and Emmeline Pankhurst.’’
