ALL Saints’ Church opened their doors for a community celebration as they hosted a summer fair on Saturday 25th June, raising over £700 towards church funds.
The Belgian mechanical organ, provided by John Knapp of Devizes, provided a lively musical atmosphere for around 400 people on the day.
There were plenty of free activities to do, with a Scalextric track, crafts for young children, tractor trail and a trail helping children to explore the beautiful church building.
The highlight for many was climbing the 106 steps to the top of All Saints’ Church Tower. On the way up members of the bell ringing team were on hand in the ringing chamber to talk about ringing the bells at All Saints. They are the third heaviest peal in the world and popular with visiting ringers. You could also see the workings of the church’s chiming clock which dates back to the 17th century.
Organisers say, “The views from the top were spectacular – especially as the weather was fine. Many people enjoyed spotting their home from the top! They also enjoyed the great views of the Westbury White Horse. “
Also available were delicious home baking, refreshments, plants grown by members of the congregation and the ever-popular tombola.
Revd Rebecca Harris, team rector said, “It was my first summer fair at All Saints. It was wonderful to welcome so many people into the church. We’d like to thank everyone who came and made it such a great event.”
Beth Thomas, churchwarden said, “The summer fair is a fantastic way to open our doors to the community of Westbury to whom the Church of All Saints’ belongs. It was perfect for families, many of whom stayed for the whole event.”
Organisers added, “There were plenty of smiles all round. Many people had never visited the church before and really enjoyed their experience. The event is part of All Saints’ Church work to encourage more people to enjoy the building as members of the community of Westbury. They also managed to raise over £700 towards much needed church funds.”
