A group of 12 Westbury Walkers, led by Mike and Liz Self, set off on a 7-8 mile walk from the centre of Mells village to encircle both the large Whatley and smaller Halecombe quarries.
A steep path took the group up towards the entrance to Whatley Quarry. They then followed a road for a short distance which led them in woods before crossing the Whatley to Chantry Road and into further woodland. Here it was decided that an interesting ring of fungi was not edible!
A short walk along a lane and then bridleway led the group across towards Halecombe Quarry. A lunch stop halfway round under a large canvas shelter was well timed to coincide with the only significant rain of an otherwise fine day.
Finishing the circuit of the quarry and then retracing a short distance of the route, the walkers reached the end of Whatley Quarry and a new viewing platform with an excellent view down the length of the quarry. The group passed a second viewing point halfway along the path above the quarry then crossed several fields before dropping back into Mells.

The club’s next walk will be an 8-mile one starting at Great Cheverell on Sunday 14th December.
