WESTBURY Town Council has followed the example of hundreds of councils across the country and has declared a climate emergency.
Councillors have pledged their commitment to looking into ways to decrease climate change, with the council’s operational and organisational working group leading the research.
They also hope that their declaration will lead the town and encourage residents to also make the commitment to do all they can to help stop the effects of climate change.
The operational and organisational working group will consider what the council can do to reduce their carbon footprint and form a list of suggestions/recommendations that the town council can then look at adopting.
These could include a draft climate change action plan, joining the Covenant of Mayors and adapting policies to ensure the climate is being considered when making decisions.
In support, cllr Gordon King said, “I wholeheartedly support the motion of declaring a climate emergency. Small actions mean an awful lot, and throughout the county it will make an overall contribution that cannot be denied. Climate change is our reality, it’s happening now and we ought to be prepared to do something about it.”
