WESTBURY Town Council has donated £5,000 to the Ukrainian Disaster Emergency Committee Crisis Appeal as a way of expressing solidarity with the people of Ukraine, following the invasion by Russia.
The town council say they, “wanted to demonstrate that their thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine who are showing such immense courage and resilience as homes are destroyed and families separated by war following the invasion by Russia.”
The council’s highways, planning & development committee agreed to make the £5,000 donation at its meeting on Monday 21st March.
The town council say, “One of the agenda items discussed at the committee meeting was a letter that had been received from Elblag in Poland requesting a letter of support (Five of the West Wiltshire towns including Westbury) have been twinned with the Polish city of Elblag since the year 2000)
“Importantly, Elblag is twinned with and supporting the town of Ternopol in Ukraine. The National Association for Local Councils (NALC) also issued a briefing, encouraging town and parish councils to express their solidarity by signing up to the statement from the political leadership of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) and that councils with the relevant authority could also donate to an overseas charity.
“The money will come from a reserve put aside for the council’s website. This means there will be no impact on the taxpayer.”
The town council have received a thank you letter from the Disasters Emergency Committee for their donation to the Ukrainian Humanitarian Appeal.
