MATRAVERS’ theatre was transformed back to the 1970s as it followed the story of friendship and sisterhood in this year’s production, Sister Act!
Sister Act follows the story of hopeful nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier (played by year 12 student Katie Bradbeer) who finds herself in the protection of Mother Superior (played by Liberty Salter) at the Queen of Angels convent following the witness of a murder by her ‘married gangster boyfriend’ Curtis Jackson ( played by Owen Smith).
With the help of former school friend turned Philadelphia police officer, Eddie, better known as Sweaty Eddie (played by Lewis Best) and her new found ‘sisters’ at the convent, Deloris overcomes her selfish dreams of stardom and fame to fight off Curtis Jackson and his men.
Convent sisters Mary Robert, (played by Maisie Long) Mary Patrick, (played by Chloe Kinder) Mary Lazarus, (played by Alice Wain) Mary Martin-of-tours, (played by Molly Brooker) and Mary Theresa (played by Faith Leitch) also learn, with the help of Deloris, that there is much more to life than being a nun.
Comedy was also brought to the show through Curtis Jackson’s right hand gangsters played by Callum Sinden, Toby Robinson, Michael Mead-Male, Ben Finbow and David Bell.
The opening night on Tuesday 14th January saw disco balls, sequins and some high-class sass as well as blessings, teachings and one ‘funky’ Monsignor (played by Oscar Morris).
The cast hit all the high notes in this “joyful, uplifting, entertaining, charismatic and a little bit bonkers performance” as described by musical director/producer, Rebecca Walker.
The show ran from Tuesday 14th to Friday 17th January. Overall, the show was full of drama, disco, life lessons and passion with all involved from backstage, tech, lighting, music, costumes and cast all putting in maximum effort.
Director of the show, Rebecca Walker said, “I am incredibly proud of the cast and crew of ‘Sister Act’. The standard of this production has been phenomenal!
“Every single person involved should be incredibly happy with this wonderful achievement. The feedback we have had from the show has been outstanding; messages of congratulations have been pouring in.
“I am left stunned, year after year, by our students and staff, who somehow seem to raise the bar with each show. What a privilege it is to work with such talent.
“I need to say a huge ‘congratulations and thank you’ to Sarah Phillips, musical director, and Becky Henderson, choreographer, without whom this production wouldn’t have happened.”
