Volunteers needed to support vulnerable young people

Wiltshire Council has renewed an appeal for volunteers to offer lodgings to vulnerable young people in need of a safe, secure family home.

There is a special need for caring people to support young people aged 16-21.

Among those in need of a caring home are unaccompanied asylum-seeking young people.

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children’s services said, “We are asking people who would like to provide accommodation for these young people to get in touch. These young people may have experienced very difficult times, but are at an important age where they need a supportive home as they access healthcare and education, while learning how to be independent.

“People coming forward will be properly supported and given expert advice and guidance, with regular visits and support for their young person.”

To be part of the scheme people will need to have a spare room and enjoy working with teenagers. Part of the process is to provide a young person with practical and emotional support, care and understanding while working closely with social workers and others.

Those providing supported lodgings don’t need to own their own home and they can also be in full time employment. They may be single people or in a partnership.

Providers will be given an allowance each week and regular supervision and contact with an allocated social worker. Training is provided and the young person will also have a social worker and a personal adviser to support them throughout their time in supported lodgings.

The council’s supported lodgings team will carry out interviews and statutory checks on those looking to be part of the scheme, as part of the suitability assessment.
