Westbury would be best placed to file this performance in the forget locker as the best it got was Martin Johnson’s 16th minute equaliser.
Either side of that there was some very poor defending and goalkeeping errors that practically gifted Welton, for whom Malick Jammeh was outstanding, the points!
The match got off to an awful start for James Goddard’s team when Chris Pile’s cross from the left wing was headed into his own net by Jordan Lawrence. To their credit United quickly got into their stride and a series of corners taken by Jamie Jordan led to headers for Dan Price and Jordan Pinder which were both blocked on the line. Westbury kept the pressure on and Johnson got on the end of James Hounsell’s clipped pass to head past Owen Knight to make it 1-1.
The hosts went straight back into the lead when Aaron Seviour beat the offside trap and teed up Jammeh who finished with ease. George Bendle was prominent on United’s left wing and several excellent runs went unrewarded as Johnson had a shot blocked and Nathan Hallett-Young headed a corner wide after Bendle had run from the halfway line before being blocked.
Johnson saw a fine 30 yarder fly narrowly wide but Welton increased their advantage on 31 when Charlie Heydon erred after Aaron Cockerell’s free kick which allowed Grant Price to bundle home.
Knight made a few routine saves from Johnson and Jordan before half time and his team mates took advantage to go 4-1 up when Pile finished off a fine move on 45.
The visitors desperately needed to score quickly after the break but despite a double substitution to try and inject energy they were unable to do so with Pinder putting a header wide after a good move between Otis Young, Jordan and Johnson.
Rovers were content to soak up whatever pressure was put on them and assured their win on 61 when Heydon badly miskicked to Seviour who applied an accurate lobbed finish. The closest United came to a consolation goal came a few minutes later when Bendle forced his way into the box and the ball fell to Jordan whose strike rebounded off a post. Play largely petered out from that point on, although Young fired a 20 yarder wide and home substitute Tom Smith powered a long ranger just over.
