December is often a time when the programmes are slightly different and the meeting of Westbury and District U3A on 10th was no exception.
On this occasion there was no invited speaker but entertainment provided from some of the interest groups. Members sat around festively decorated tables enjoying refreshments while listening to a variety of very high quality items.
These ranged from readings, a rendition of a Flanders and Swann song where everyone could join in the chorus, members reading their own work and a very lively ukulele trio who got everyone’s toes tapping. The three members of the band each had a different size ukulele so each produced a slightly different sound. Watching the trio it was evident that there had been a great deal of fun in the rehearsal sessions for their performance.
In contrast the way in which the audience was hanging on every word of the readings showed just the skill of the members who read and of the high creative standard achieved by those reading their own work.
A break at half time enabled tea and coffee to be enjoyed whilst members attempted the quizzes and looked at the exhibitions of work produced by the art and textile interest groups. Two people got full marks in the art quiz, the bird watchers quiz also produced two winners and whilst no one guessed the exact number of buttons in the jar the winner was remarkably near!
On 14th January members will hear ‘Stolen Images – the Origins of Church Architecture’, the speaker is Peter Knight from Calne. On 11th February the talk at the monthly general meeting is about the ‘Life of a Tour Guide.
Monthly meetings are held at the United Reformed Church starting at 2.00pm, interest groups, open to all members, arrange their own venues and times. U3A invite you to come along.
