COMIC Relief is back this Friday, and residents, businesses, and schools are gearing up to do something funny for money and help the appeal. Comic Relief runs every two years, alternating with its sister project Sport Relief. The event began in 1985 to help raise cash to combat famine in Ethiopia. Since then, the appeal has raised over £800million to tackle poverty and social injustice across the UK, Africa, and some of the world’s poorest countries. On Friday 15th March the appeal will be spearheaded by the fundraising broadcast on BBC One, but throughout the week people in Westbury will be running their own activities to raise money for the appeal. At Matravers School, three brave male teachers have put their names forward to have their legs waxed on Friday and students will sponsor them to make the pain worthwhile. Leighton Recreation Centre will host a coffee morning on Friday from 9.15am-12.00noon. As well as enjoying coffee and cake, you can make the most of exercise taster sessions – for more information please call 01373 824 448. Edington resident Julie Swabey took to the stage on Monday night in Bath for Komedia’s ‘Stand Up If You Dare… for Comic Relief’, among other budding comedians, with a paying audience donating to Comic Relief. Westbury Leigh Primary School has already been busy selling red noses, and on the day itself will wear ‘crazy clothes’ to school – with prizes for the craziest costumes. There will be a cake sale and pupils will make a donation to vote for which teacher they would like to be ‘made up’ for the day. Pupils at Bratton Primary School will take part in a sponsored cross-country run in the school grounds on Friday. The kitchen staff and Friends of Dilton School will be holding a cake sale with all proceeds to Comic Relief. Students at Fairfield Farm College will raise funds by donning a funny hat, or wearing their favourite pyjamas to school. A paper plane race, joke contest, and hair competition were among the events taking place at Bitham Brook Primary School on Monday, ahead of the big day. Lenny Henry, Mary Berry, Keith Lemon, Helen Skelton, and Jessie J are among the celebrities backing this year’s appeal.
