TWO Westbury men have raised over £2,000 for charity after abseiling 100m down Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower, more than four times their original £500 target.
Guy Aked has been raising money for children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent, after his daughter Charley was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia at the age of one.
Charley underwent treatment and is now in remission, and Guy wanted to give something back to the charity that helped his family through the ordeal.
He said, “Throughout the difficult period in hospital my wife, Julie, and I were given a room in Sam’s House, one of CLIC Sargent’s homes from home in Bristol, enabling us to both stay close to the hospital and Charley.
“We could not have coped without Sam’s House and the amazing staff who run it. We need to ensure the charity can continue to help other families in the future.”
Last Sunday’s abseil involved Guy and his friend Chris Dobbie, rappelling 100m down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth Harbour.
Guy said, “I ‘roped in’ a friend and colleague, Chris, to do it with me. We completed the abseil and survived, managing to raise over £2,000 in the end.”
CLIC Sargent is a charity who provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to children with cancer and their families.
