As townsfolk will probably be aware by now Westbury Swimming Pool will be celebrating 130 years of serving the town, initially as a bathing facility and now as a swimming pool, on Thursday 24th May.
This makes your local pool the oldest public operating Victorian Swimming Pool in the country.
In celebration of this, Places for People Leisure who operate the site on behalf of Wiltshire Council are running a competition open to members and non-members.
General manager, Colin Larrigan says, “We challenge you to swim from Westbury Swimming Pool to the Westbury White Horse as the crow flies. This is 1.6 miles, which is equivalent to 130 lengths (one for every year we have been open). There will be a commemorative medal for the person that achieves this in the quickest time, however all people who complete the challenge will be entered into a prize draw to win a free three-month swim membership.”
To enter the competition you must be 18 years and over, go and see the team at the pool in Church Street Westbury and they will set you up and issue you with a Swimtag when you swim, to record the distance covered.
The team is planning a fun and lively celebration for the whole community on Thursday 24th May including a pop-up museum with artefacts from across the years, fancy dress, and VIP guests – more details will follow. The competition winner will be announced on the day and contacted if they are not able to be present at the event.
Half-Term swimming and intensive lessons at Westbury Swimming Pool
If you’re looking for activities with the children this half-term, did you know that under 16s ‘Swim for Free’ during the school holidays, during selected swimming sessions? See the timetable on the website for details.
If you haven’t already registered your child at the pool for this scheme then make sure you pop along and complete the registration form ahead of the holidays. There are also ‘Intensive Swimming’ lessons running, which is a great way of building their confidence wherever they are currently at with their swimming ability. Children do not need to be registered in the current swimming programme to take part.
