SCHOOLS in the Westbury area all stayed firmly above the national standard in the recent Key Stage 2 performance tables, which saw the English and Wiltshire averages rise for the fourth year in a row.
The performance tables, released prior to Christmas, measure the percentage of pupils achieving level four or higher in their English and maths SATs.
Dilton Marsh Primary School saw 20% more of its students reach that level than in the previous year; its new total of 90% meant it was the most improved and highest achieving school in the area.
Westbury Junior School saw a 13% improvement on last year, bringing it up to 80% – level with the new national and Wiltshire averages.
Bratton remained at 76%, while others saw declines from 2014 results: Bitham Brook dropped from 88% to 82%, Chapmanslade from 93% to 77%, and Westbury Leigh from 80% to 70%, but all stayed firmly above the national minimum standard of 65%.
Headteacher of Dilton Marsh Primary School, Charlotte Hyde said, “I am delighted to see the hard work of all the staff and the children reflected in another successful year of results. Well done everyone!
“All of our staff care deeply about the children and work tirelessly to give them the very best education possible. I am proud to be part of such a dedicated team.
“However, this is just one part of a much bigger picture as we have a very creative and exciting curriculum that enhances and gives a real context to the children’s learning, and in developing them as well-rounded individuals.”
The performance tables showed that primary education has improved on a national scale, with 80% of pupils achieving level four or above in reading, writing and mathematics. In 2010, one in three pupils did not achieve this level, compared to one in five today.
2015 will be the final year that this measure of achievement will be used; as of summer 2016 pupils will be assessed against a higher standard in line with the revised curriculum put in place in September 2014.
