THE Westbury Walkers recently took part in a special walk in Devizes in memory of their late member, Lynda Croft, who recently died.
The group say, “It was fine and warm day on Sunday 13th November when 13 members of The Westbury Walkers led by Teressa Mitchard set out from the Wharf Car Park, Devizes for an eight mile walk in the Roundway Down area.
“The walk was chosen as it was a favourite of the club’s treasurer Lynda who had recently died suddenly and far too soon.
“The group set off along the Kennet and Avon canal for a few hundred yards, and then crossed the bridge over the canal to follow Quakers Walk until they reached a lane. They then took a footpath which ran parallel to the lane as it climbed towards the Whitehorse.
“On reaching the summit they continued to walk eastwards on Roundway Hill. Being Remembrance Sunday, the group stopped at 11am and observed a two-minute silence and then continued for another half a mile before turning left and joined the Wessex Ridgeway towards Hill Cottage. At this point they took a left-hand fork, then continued straight ahead before turning left on a footpath that led them to Oliver’s Castle where they stopped for lunch.
“As this walk was in memory of their late colleague, Lynda, the group then formed a circle and spent time exchanging thoughts and memories of her.
“Moving on again, in the afternoon, the group continued along the footpath on the edge of Oliver’s Castle then joined a bridleway and continued for a further mile until they turned off right and followed a path down a steep slope to pick up the road again. From here, they walked across a field and then retraced the route back to the Wharf Car Park.”
