A LOCAL cyclist has raised over £1,200 by cycling to Cadney, North Lincolnshire, in memory of his father-in-law.
Gary Treherne, who has been a member of Westbury Wheelers since 1997, took on the challenge in September, which saw him cover over 220 miles at an average speed of 17.5mph. His trip north raised a grand total of £1,225 for Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley.
Gary said, “Last February we suffered the loss of my father-in-law Eric Marshall, a former employee of Blue Circle at Westbury, to cancer.
“During his short illness Dorothy House were a great help to both him and the family, so I decided it would be a great idea to raise some funds to show our appreciation and came across the idea of cycling from Eric’s address in Warminster to his birthplace in Cadney, North Lincolnshire; approximately 220 miles. I set off on what would have been Eric’s 83rd birthday in September, with my wife and her brother and sister as my back-up team.
“The first part of the ride was 87 miles from Warminster to Wellesbourne and down the Fosse Way, which I completed in five hours.
“The next day gave me the interesting experience of riding through the centre of Leicester, on to Melton Mowbray for a pie and then to Lincoln.
“After conquering the steep hill to the side of Lincoln Cathedral I had the final part of the ride up the dreaded A15; one of the most dangerous roads in the country, and not for the faint hearted!
“After making the mistake of following a local’s directions to Cadney I made it, only to be stuck on the wrong side of a canal.
“We stayed in Lincoln and met up with Eric’s niece and her husband for a well earned celebration dinner in his honour.
“As a result of my efforts I managed to raise £1,225 for Dorothy House from friends, colleagues, and a donation of over a £100 from Sharon Lemaire through sales and collection at her shop in Warminster.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the ride and the weather was just right! No extremes of wind, and dry.
“I’m very pleased with the amount raised; it was double the amount that I expected! I would like to do it again with my brother-in-law; we originally planned to go together but he couldn’t find time for the training.”
