A LOCAL girls’ team, Westbury Youth Amazons, will be representing the county at Futsal 5-a-side at a tournament finals in Paignton, Devon on 31st May.
The girls started their journey after success in the Futsal tournament in Swindon on Saturday 25th April. Wiltshire FA had invited girls’ teams from across the county to take part in Futsal, the 5-a-side fast flowing game of football developed in South America.
The surface, ball and rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces. The girls qualified from the league stages to make it through to the semi-finals, where they met a team from Ashton Keynes. A closely fought semi saw the girls progress on to the final against Frome Town Ladies, which they won 2-0.
Westbury Youth Amazons now go on to represent the county at the South West Regional Futsal finals in Devon, facing the best teams from Somerset, Devon, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Cornwall and Dorset
Manager Andy Jordan said, “It’s a fantastic result and a testament to the growth of girls’ football at Westbury Youth. We now have girls’ teams in four age groups, going from strength to strength.”
