The Westbury Gasification Action Group (WGAG) has launched a campaign calling for the town’s welcome signs to reflect what they say is the overwhelming public opposition to the proposed incinerator.
The group says that its suggestion – ‘Westbury – Where we all say ‘No Westbury Incinerator’ – would send a clear and united message. They have proposed new signs on the way into the town, making clear the town’s opposition to the £200million incinerator (see picture).
“This is an essential message from the Westbury community – we all wish to see it, loud and proud, until we don’t need it anymore!” the group said. “What do you think? Let us and our town council know.”

WGAG have led the campaign against proposals from Northacre Renewable Energy for the incinerator which will burn non-recyclable waste to generate electricity. The incinerator was given planning permission by a Government Planning Inspector in 2023 despite overwhelming local opposition.
The group says this isn’t just a gimmick; it’s a reflection of how the community feels about what they describe as the “single biggest environmental disaster Westbury and Wiltshire has ever faced.”
“Whenever the subject is raised, Westbury Town Council appear strong and ever on-side,” the group said. “So, in a spirit of unity and community support, we want to see more #NoWestburyIncinerator banners and branding – not just on homes and railings, but at the gateways to our town.
“The community and all levels of council administration in Wiltshire must stand together. There must be #NoWestburyIncinerator.”
WGAG added, “We must all remain vigilant and in loud and highly visible opposition.”
The group is now urging local residents to contact councillors, display banners, and show support for their campaign through social media using the #NoWestburyIncinerator hashtag and keep the pressure up to fight the proposals.
