A CAMPAIGN organised by Bratton Church Institute members to repair the roof of the community building has raised an impressive £30,000 – and work is currently under way to repair the 100-year-old building.
The work will see the tiles replaced on the roof as well as structural repairs to ensure that the well-used community building is in a good state for the start of the new school term as it is often used to host school clubs and events. The work is expected to be completed by the end of August.
Over the past year, church institute members have organised a variety of fundraising events in Bratton to raise the funds – with around £20,000 coming directly from their fundraising efforts and a further £10,000 secured through grants.
Project manager Peter Sharland has thanked everyone who donated to the cause. “The fundraising campaign has been superb and I want to thank everyone who generously donated,” he said. “The ‘raise the roof’ campaign was organised last October and it has been huge success – in that time we’ve seen a concert by The Melstock Band, a table top sale, events by the teabags team, art in the garden, an open day with the Bratton Community Brass Bands, the Christmas market and more.
“A big thank you as well to the many grants we have received – this includes the charity Action with Communities in Rural England, the Westbury Area Board, Bratton Parish Council and the Edington Station Fund.
“The reason we need to repair the roof is mostly due to its age – it’s 100 years old and because of this there are issues with leaking through the roof, and we also found that parts were rotting so the tiles had to be removed and completely reinsulated. The guttering all had to be replaced as well and the front and back gables needed repairing. The leaking was quite bad so we had to strip it right back.”
