AS the Poppy Appeal launches in Westbury this weekend, the Royal British Legion hope local people will be as generous as ever in the approach to Remembrance Sunday on the 10th November.
The Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion will be out with their poppies and collecting donations from the 28th October, and hope the appeal will match or better the £7,000 raised last year.
The Poppy Appeal is a key way the Royal British Legion raises money to support members of the Armed Forces community, and veterans of all ages and their families.
Mary Kneen, chair of the Westbury branch of the Royal British Legion said, “We will have collection boxes in local shops, and there will be collectors in the local supermarkets.
“We always have people give really generously which is very much appreciated. The Royal British Legion is being called on more and more, and we do need the public’s support because we are a charity.
“In this day and age, when people are struggling and tightening their belts, people still do put their hands in their pockets. I think a lot of younger people now relate to Remembrance – they know friends, or friends of friends, in their generation who have been out there fighting. That’s when it starts to bring it home.
“We are always very grateful to the people of Westbury who support Remembrance Sunday and give generously to the Poppy Appeal.”
Remembrance Sunday will be marked on the 10th November. The parade will leave the Market Place at 10.30am and march to the war memorial in Edward Street. The service will include the silence at 11.00am and a collection.
