Westbury Lions’ Donkey Derby will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a Wild West theme next weekend, with what is anticipated to be the best derby ever.
Already a firm family favourite, this year’s Lions Donkey Derby looks set to become the most successful ever as it gets under starter’s orders on Sunday 14th June at the White Horse Country Park.
Organiser and Lions president Nigel Coward said, “Over the years the Donkey Derby has been very well supported by the people of Westbury. It is always great fun and is one of the more important fund raising events on the Westbury Lions calendar.
“It’s hard to believe we have been doing this event for 10 years! One of the reasons that I think people support us is because they know they will have a great day and that the money raised will go back into the community to benefit local causes.”
Families are advised to get in early this year to ensure children book their rides for the races as competition for places will be fierce!
There will be a real Wild West theme and a local group of Cowboys will be entertaining with not one but two real authentic cowboy shows, complete with real town, wagons and horses. A stall selling “Wild West” items will help the children get involved.
For those wishing to have a flutter, the ever popular Tote stand will be sited close to the race track.
There will be plenty to do throughout the day, with an array of fair rides, stalls, coconut shy, clown striker, and face painting to name a few. The model railway is back with their popular train ready to give rides throughout the afternoon too.
The club is also very pleased to be joined by Natasha Penny with her Motorscape Rally entry for 2015, who this year will be raising money on behalf of Westbury Lions as she drives her car from the UK to Venice.
For those more energetic types there is the three legged race, egg & spoon race and sack race for both parents and children alike – these races will be held beside the race track in between the donkey races.
Refreshments will be on hand from the staff of the White Horse Country Park and Marshfield ice cream.
Tickets on the day are just £5 for adults and £1 for teens. Accompanied children under 13 are free. For more information visit the Westbury Lions website www.westburylions.org.uk
